The Outdoor Control Sample
Mold spores exist naturally in all outdoor air — there is no such thing as a "zero spore" environment. That's why every credible air sampling test includes an outdoor control sample, collected at the same time as the indoor samples, just outside the building. Indoor results are only meaningful when compared against this baseline. If indoor counts and species composition are similar to or lower than outdoors, that is generally a normal result. If indoor counts are substantially higher, or include species rarely found outdoors, that points to an indoor source.
